Lapland sits in the auroral zone: 200 aurora nights every year

Finnish Lapland sits squarely in the auroral zone: the belt around Earth where Northern Lights appear most often. During the Christmas holiday period, Rovaniemi enjoys roughly 18 hours of darkness per day, giving you multiple opportunities every night.

The lights appear on average 200 nights per year somewhere in Lapland. With the right conditions (a clear sky and KP index ≥ 3) you can see them right over your head. The KP index is a 0–9 scale of geomagnetic activity: the higher it is, the brighter and more visible the auroras, and in Lapland a KP of 3 or more already gives good displays.

Temperatures reach -25 °C. Layer up: thermal base, fleece mid-layer, and a proper Arctic outer layer. Hand warmers essential.

Manual mode: ISO 800–3200, f/2.8, 5–20 sec exposure, wide-angle lens. Use a tripod and remote shutter.
